If any of you chickadees are familiar with La Mer, you’ll know that it’s freaking expensive. And if you aren’t familiar with La Mer, let me tell you…it’s freaking expensive! I do very little when it comes to skincare, but I do splurge on this pricey product and I’m here to tell you why. Keep reading for five ways to use La Mer, and really get your money’s worth!
First things first, let’s break down La Mer’s history. This magic-in-a-jar was first created by Max Huber, a scientist + astrologist who began looking for a remedy to treat burns he suffered in an experiment gone wrong. After many years…like almost 12…and thousands of formulas, Huber landed on a “miracle broth” with a sea kelp base. Huber noticed that sea kelp had self-regenerating properties and could be used to renew the cells within our skin.
Today, the formula created by Max Huber is highly sought after. It’s rumored Esteé Lauder consulted a medium [ yes, the “I see dead people” type of medium ] to communicate with Huber from beyond the grave when their lab was having trouble recreating La Mer’s formula after his death. You can read all sorts of craziness about La Mer + its history HERE.
Now, let’s chat about what exactly La Mer does and how to apply it. It’s most commonly known to treat severe dryness, and there’s a bit of a ritual to applying it. In order to apply it, you’ll use the teeeeeny tiny spoon that comes with each jar to scoop a pea size drop into your hand. Trust me, a little bit goes a long way! Oh, and if you’re thinking that tiny spoon is so unnecessary [ it’s okay…I used to roll my eyes at that tiny spoon, too ], think again! Using it prevents the germs + bacteria on your hands from getting into the jar. Are you fishing that tiny spoon out of the trash right about now?! We’ve all been there. No judgement 🙂
La Mer comes whipped into a thick cream. But in order to activate its *magic powers*, you’ll have to warm it between your fingers until it turns translucent. Then, gently pat onto the skin.
I’m painfully aware of the fact that La Mer costs the equivalent of a large portion of my rent. So you better believe I had to find more use for it than moisturizing a bit of dry skin. Scroll on for my top five ways to use magic potion.
FIVE WAYS TO USE LA MER
Soothing a sunburn : As I mentioned earlier, La Mer was first invented to treat burns. On the rare occasion that I sit in the sun without SPF + my face gets fried, La Mer can almost completely soothe my sunburn overnight.
Before getting glam : La Mer can do wonders for evening out skin tone + reducing the look of blemishes. Because I *literally* can’t afford to use La Mer every night, I’ll be sure to use it nightly for a week leading up to any big events, photoshoots or parties! After using it for a week, my skin has a matte finish perfect for applying makeup.
As a lip balm : Again, I don’t do this often, but sometimes my lips are so chapped and nothing will help! If I’m visiting a really cold or dry climate, I’ll use a bit of La Mer as a lip balm before bed.
On the plane : There’s nothing like a good ol’ airplane to suck the moisture right out of your skin. A drop before take off makes a world of difference! Here’s a pro tip : sometimes makeup counters at department stores have samples of La Mer perfect for slipping into your carry on bag.
For scars : If you’ve ever had surgery, taken a tumble or had a shaving mishap, you probably have a pesky scar somewhere on your body that bothers you. For me, it was the incision on the side of my right breast from a tumor removal, which was not cute when wearing bathing suits. After the incision had scarred over, I tried a bit La Mer on it twice a day, and the scar totally faded! I did this for about a month, but if I did it for longer I think the scar would’ve disappeared almost completely!
