This may garner countless “oh shut up”s from you gals living in actually cold climates, but it’s been pretty cold in LA. Like, fifty degrees. Which means my beach days are more leggings and a sweater than a bikini. Which means I’m not achieving that bronze glow I like to have. Where do I turn?! A spray tan! Keep reading to get the low down on my tips for spray tanning.
One disclaimer before this post gets goin’…I love the sun, and think that a bit of sun everyday [ while wearing SPF, of course ], makes for healthier, happier people. However, we’re learning more + more about the damaging and dangerous effects of UV rays on our skin. The baby oil I used to lather on in high school is now considered a major no-no, as it can cause painful sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer. And tanning beds are even worse. One of the things my mom never let me do was go to the tanning bed, and thank goodness for mammas like her! People who first use a tanning bed before the age of 35 increase their risk of melanoma [ a tumor associated with skin cancer ] by 75%. Yikes!
Given all this scary information, you may be thinking that being pale is a small price to pay for staying safe in the skin cancer department. But think again! There’s a solution that I use religiously. And no, it doesn’t leave you looking like a Cheeto puff or a certain president. What is this magical solution? Organic, in-home spray tanning. And living in Los Angeles, there’s only one spray tan I trust…On the Go Glow!
Another disclaimer…this is not sponsored. I am not getting paid to write this and actually pay for these tans! A blogger paying for something?! Could it be true?! Yes! Organic spray tanning is something I “treat myself” to when I’m needing a healthy glow or a little self esteem booster.
On the Go Glow was founded by Valerie Mya in 2012 in Los Angeles and is open 24/7. That’s right, twenty four seven! So if for some reason you wake up at 3 AM wanting a spray tan [ no judgement, I can’t say I haven’t been there myself ], On the Go Glow has got you covered! Their tanning stylists come straight to your door, and in fifteen minutes you’re glowing from head to toe. If you’ve gotten a spray tan before, you know that most sprays have a gross, chemical-y smell. On the Go Glow is brown sugar based, chemical free and 100% organic, so it smells kind of amazing. And because it’s brown sugar based, there’s no chance of any orange tones. It’s all bronze!
If you’ve never gotten a spray tan before, or have questions about the process, check out the tips below!
TIPS FOR BEFORE SPRAY TANNING
Get your situation totally situated before getting sprayed! That means shaving, waxing, etc. If you’re getting sprayed for a special event like a wedding or a formal event, be sure to get your nails done before, as chemicals from the nail salon could mess up your tan!
Exfoliate. Exfoliate. Exfoliate. I use a number of exfoliants in the shower to ensure I have none of those pesky little dead skin cells hanging around when I get sprayed. I’ve rounded up my exfoliation favorites below!
Do not put anything on your skin before getting sprayed. No lotions, oils, makeup, deodorant, etc. You want your skin to be au natural, free of anything that could interact with the tanning solution.
TIPS FOR DURING SPRAY TANNING
So, a stranger comes to your house with a large tent and a scary looking machine. Don’t freak out! The gals at On the Go Glow, and I’m sure from most mobile spray tan companies, are super professional and make you feel totally at ease.
The burning question is…what do I wear?! The answer is…it’s totally up to you! You can undress to your comfort, whether that means a bathing suit or your birthday suit. If you do choose to wear some type of clothing, be sure it’s something that creates minimal tan lines, like a bandeau top. I always opt to wear nothing at all. It’s a bit weird the first time you strip down naked in front of someone you don’t know, but On the Go Glow puts you right at ease. They totally understand how it can be an embarrassing experience, and strive to promote confidence and self love.
You’ve decided what [ or what not ] to wear. Now, what do you do? There are a few movements and “poses” you’ll have to strike while being sprayed to avoid any streaks or lines. But don’t worry, your stylist will tell you exactly what to do!
TIPS FOR AFTER SPRAY TANNING
Depending on the type of tan you get, you have to wait a certain amount of time to shower. Again, your stylist will tell you the rules. On the Go Glow offers two types of tanning…the express, which you can wash off in four hours, and the normal, which you can wash off in eight hours. I do the four hour express, and I like to do it around 6:00 PM so I can shower right before bed!
When you take your first post-tan shower, do not use any soap or body wash. Don’t scrub or exfoliate your skin, and don’t rub too hard when drying off with your towel.
After you shower, moisturize with lotion! Continue to moisturize everyday, all over your body, to keep your tan locked in for longer. I’ll link some of my favorite moisturizers for face + body below.
I got sprayed the night before these photos, to give you an idea of how the tan looks both in a bikini and a one piece. I also got sprayed right before I went to Belize, which you can see by clicking HERE.
