During a recent closet clean out, I realized something kiiiiind of crazy. I only have one, yes ONE pair of heels left in my wardrobe! Since graduating college and moving to LA, my lifestyle has become much more “me” and I don’t do many things that require high heels, lots of makeup and fancy clothes. For the most part, I loooove that “going out” for me entails having a beer by the beach, but I do miss the days of formals and parties where I could dress to the nines. If you’re like me, dressing up does not equal sky high heels and sequins…so keep scrolling for tips on dressing up while laying back!
HIDE THOSE HEELS
Unless your event is black tie, ditch those heels! Opt for a more stable + supportive wedge, or a pair of strappy flat forms. Heels are hard to walk in, even harder to dance in and leave you soaking your toes in a hot bath at the end of the night! Even if your event is black tie, you can wear a pair of sandals + hide them with a floor length dress!
While you should probably stay away from cotton and jersey knit for a cocktail party, there are lots of high end fabrics that are comfortable, too! I try to stay away from scratchy sequins and itchy lace whenever possible. Silk + velvet are smooth and soft, and even some types of polyester come in as a close second [ like this dress I’m wearing from Lucy Paris ].
JUMP IN A JUMPSUIT
If you’re looking to get down on the dance floor or catch a bouquet without a major wardrobe malfunction, choose a jumpsuit instead of a dress! Lately I’m loving this poly blend [ similar look to silk ] deep v-neck jumpsuit by Saylor.
