I’ll admit it, I’ve become a spoiled brat in the weather department since I moved to Los Angeles. Growing up in Chicago, I was a seasoned pro at keeping warm and braving winter storms…but I’m ashamed to say I’ve lost my edge. As I boarded the plane to NYC for Fashion Week in sunny Los Angeles, I got a text from my mamma asking if I was delayed due to weather. What?! No?! It’s sunny and 75 degrees here, mom, duh! I thought. Then, a terrible realization hit me like a snowball to the face…I’m headed to NYC where it [ dun dun dun] SNOWS! My flight took off just before the rest of the LAX –> JFK flights were cancelled due to the incoming blizzard. I landed late to a chilly but dry New York night, and woke up the next morning to a major winter storm. Needless to say, Fashion Week was off to a snowy start!
I forgot how absolutely beautiful a fresh covering of snow can make an otherwise dirty city street. I also forgot how absolutely freezing your toes can become if you don’t wear the right boots! Despite my frostbitten feet, I had the best time walking almost empty NYC streets as seasoned New Yorkers opted to stay inside and out of the cold. Standing outside of the shows, I watched fashionable women jump over snowbanks in sequins and suede knee high boots…it was a combination of the beautiful white winters of my childhood mixed with my passion of adulthood, fashion. All in all, NYFW got off to a magical start. I even had a minute to stop by Lexy Monaco’s [ photog + friend ] amazing Upper West Side studio and play around in Central Park!
