It’s FRIDAAAAY and I’m so excited to be ending a long, crazy week! I’m headed to Austin, TX for a little weekend getaway tonight and can’t wait to visit my old stompin’ grounds (and eat some queso!). Since moving to LA from Austin, I’ve had to find all new locations for taking photos, which is fun and challenging at the same time. My photographer and friend, Hanna, is a California native, so she’s been super helpful in scouting cool locations and showing me secret spots.
We shot this Faithful the Brand jumpsuit at an abandoned house in Carpinteria, CA and I love the result! It looks like we could’ve been on a farm or an old plantation and we even had a stray kitty some say hi. I love little easter egg moments like that…unplanned, unposed images always end up being my favorite! Keep scrollin’ for my tips on finding the right shoot locations, playing with light and other ways to get the best images for your blog!
MY FAVE PHOTO SPOTS
For all my SoCal babes, here’s a quick list of my favorite go-to locations for boho photoshoots:
- Topanga Beach, Malibu | Perfect for the quintessential Cali beach shoot, but also has tons of succulents and bamboo to shoot against.
- Hidden Valley, Thousand Oaks | A short(ish) drive from LA and gives off rural vibes with gorgeous sprawling fields and empty country roads.
- Carpinteria, Near Santa Barbara | My photog, Hanna, lives here and it’s SO beautiful. There’s quaint beachside neighborhoods, old railroad tracks and even a secret palm tree forest.
- Culver City, Los Angeles | Culver City has tons of retro neighborhoods perfect for exploring. If you have time to kill, drive around and you’ll be sure to find a cute house or a vintage car parked on the street.
FIND A PHOTOG YOU LOVE
Finding the right photographer is one of the most important aspects of creating consistent visuals and a cohesive aesthetic for your blog. When I first started blogging, I shot with tons of different photographers to get looks done quickly, but the look + feel of my blog was all over the place! Finding one or two photographers whose vision you relate to and who you can truly collaborate with is the first step in taking amazing images. Hanna and I are partners in any shoot we do. We split the fee that the brand is paying us, we brainstorm locations together and we truly work as a team. Having brands will reach out to us as a duo because we’ve established a certain look and vibe to every project we do together is one of my proudest accomplishments as a blogger.
WORK WITH NATURAL LIGHT
One major thing I love about my photog, Hanna, is that she isn’t afraid of natural light. While shooting in shaded sun is a fool proof way to get a good shot, it’s fun to play around with full sun or sun flares. My best advice here is to work with your photographer on angles and positioning to play with natural light. You won’t always get it right, and some spots might be too sunny, but when the light hits in the perfect place…it’s magic!
JUST GO WITH IT
With the stress of meeting post deadlines, getting images for a brand or shooting multiple looks in a day, it can be easy to plan your shoot to death. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that not having a plan is the best plan for getting unique, re-post worthy photos. This is still something I’m working on, because as bloggers we love to pose and plan out our shoots. Buuuut, you’ll end up having more fun and getting better images if you treat each shoot as a chance to explore a new location, incorporate movement and go with whatever comes your way. It’s real life elements like a stray kitty wandering along, a gust of wind or even a sudden rainstorm that can make a shoot different and beautiful.
