Since moving to Los Angeles, I’ve been on a mission to seek out LA based brands and designers. Whether it be designers, painters, graffiti artists, musicians, etc., artists are such a huge part of the culture of any city, especially Los Angeles. I find that local designers are more dedicated to craftsmanship and quality than anyone else, and they put so much time and love into each piece.
An amazing example of this is Christy Dawn, an LA based brand hand-sewn by local artisans. Even more amazing, Christy Dawn uses only deadstock fabrics, or extra fabric left over that other fashion houses didn’t use. Why does this matter? First, it eliminates the use for new fabric production, which involves toxic chemicals and water pollution. Secondly, it prevents this excess fabric from going into landfills (yuck!). Annnnd, from a design standpoint, using these small rolls of headstock means that each piece is made from one-of-a-kind fabric you won’t find anywhere else.
Receiving the Margot Two Piece by Christy Dawn in the mail was nothing like ripping open the plastic shipping bags that normally show up at my door. It came in a carved wooden treasure box with fresh lavender, wrapped in paper with a handwritten note…swoon! I can’t tell you guys how special it was to receive something so beautifully packaged and expertly designed in a day and age where everything is mass produced. It really is the little things in life 🙂
